I don't know if using a mushroom or star is the only way to avoid the Blue Shell on the Wii version. On the DS you can do a Miniturbo and jump just before getting hit to avoid it, don't know about the Wii version.
The problem is not the blue shell, but that in the Wii version is really annoying. Just make it appear less. And battle mode should be fixed. I want to be able to play just against my friends.
