Layton is a puzzle game from the outset, not an action game that got more puzzles later on.

Doesn't matter. It'd still work.

Not that Zelda puzzles typically require "solutions" of the Layton bent, anyway

No, it will not. The expanded audience plays a game to pass the time. If they pick up a puzzle game, to have it break into another genre gets annoying. Same with Zelda. Note the sales of series with the expanded audience, regardless of the overall sales.

The expanded audience has no single reason for picking up a game, they are not a uniform demographic.

That's not what I mean either. You keep getting my points off.

You know how much the traditional gamers hate the water temples. What makes you think less dedicated gamers would tolerate merely milder forms of that? It's not an area that's just like the others but harder. That's why the Super Guide worked for Mario. It was still the Mario areas. It would not work to throw a different kind of gameplay when people are just picking up the game to kill some time.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
