Oh, I've ran into so many of these over the years, so I'll just list some of the more recent ones.

Bioshock - Was supposed to be something that revolutionized shooters, and ended up being a watered down steampunk version of System Shock 2. Still better than most grey/brown shooters that come out nowadays.

Mass Effect - Would've worked a lot better as a miniseries than an actual game. Liked the universe, liked the characters, liked the setting, but the gameplay... When you spend hours reading the codex entries and conversing with the characters, but start running through all the action sequences midway thru the game because you just don't want to do them anymore, even though your victory is a foregone conclusion, you know the game's flawed.


Dragon Age: Origins - It's Neverwinter Nights: Special Edition with Biowares homebrew rules. 'Nuff said.

Really? It's because you read the codex entries that you find the action following everything interesting. To each their own I guess.

I found that the codex entries were pretty interesting by themselves, and they did contribute a bit to the action, but not enough. Apart from their backstory, the Geth were as bland enemies as one could get, and besides the first storyline missions and the moon thingy, all fights amounted roughly to this:

1)Camp a doorway / corner / box

2)Lob a few grenades / use a few powers

3)Activate the pistol DPS ability and hold down the left mouse button

Lather, rinse, repeat a kajillion times. With the Mako it was even worse after the novelty of riding up and down mountains wore off (=after 40 minutes or so).

And yeah - if ME was a (mini)series they would've been forced to actually give Shepard a personality.
