Wait didn't Blu Ray win the HD format war? Isn't the PS3 also helping to push the sale of HDTV's and the competition (XBOX) to also produce HD games and thus pushing more sales of HDTV's? The PS3 has created such a demand in markets that Sony has it's hand in that it has to be looked at holistically rather than "oh the PS3 failed cuz it's third, Sony sucks." Doesn't Sony have a stake in both Blu Ray royalties/hardware sales as well as HDTV production? If you think all sony does is fail you are a blinded fan boy. Sony is always in the forefront of technology innovation and sometimes it pays off and sometimes it doesn't but more often then not it pays of for sony seeing as the company hadn't had a quarterly loss in over a decade until the recent recession began.
Nintendo's only worry is gaming. That's all it does. It has to profit from gaming. It's a gaming company.
Microsoft's worry is protecting it's OS marketshare from possible competition and increasing it's XBOX marketshare is a way to do this and profit is it's second priority. Now that it has a large market share it is focusing more on profit but don't think for one second MS will go the way of Nintendo's gamecube and be happy losing marketshare to remain profitable. That will never be their strategy.
Sony has made it clear that creating market demand for all of it's electronic markets is it's priority. It's not simply just to increase marketshare or make a profit from gaming alone. Sony has it's hand in a lot of electronics and they look at the big picture. PS3 has hurt them from a narrow view point but when you look at it it has boosted a lot of other areas that Sony has interest in. So simply lining up sales numbers does not determine the success of each individual company. They all have different goals.
