I agree 2D is very much viable. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a great example. Another is Tatsunoko vs Capcom. A fighting game that is still 2D. Perhaps it's because I grew up with 2D and then 3D but I found video of that game far more enjoyable to watch then other 3D fighters. It's simply, very effective, and great to look at. The same can be said for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. A great fighting game but it is 2D and people love it. Then there is Muramasa: THe Demon Blade which is 2D and just beautiful. 2D gaming is fully viable if it is allowed. Nintendo seems to have no issues with 2D games being on their systems. They embrace it still. I prefer a 2D game that looks great and plays great over something that is 3D simply because it's expected due to the technology that is avaliable. If it works as a 2D game best then make it 2D. Everything does not have to be 3D. Just a note current 2D games aren't old school 2D anyway but more of a hybrid at times of the two systems I think.
I find that sometimes 2D games can look better then 3D games. Granted in the end it's personal preference in the end but 3D isn't "better" just because it's 3D. I think sometimes people think that.
The reason I think we don't see a lot more games in 2D is because Sony and Microsoft seem to have issues with it. I believe Sony all but banned 2D games on the PS2 during it's later years as well. Microsoft seems more okay with it though but dont' think I've ever seen them embrace it.
