Although noname2200 already linked to comments I made in another thread (thanks noname2200 *blush*) here's my two cents.
It doesn't matter. Nintendo is reaching the mainstream audience that IGN cannot. In fact it's an audience the editor's of IGN (who are not schooled journalists just fanboys) do not even understand.
Are they all wrong in their beliefs? Not entirely. There's nothing inheritantly wrong with acheivements, epic stories and HD graphics and I wouldn't complain if Wii had them but then again, I don't give a rats ass it doesn't. I have a 360. Wii get 95% of my playtime because I don't have time for epic stories (and really, calling video game stories 'epic' is pure self-indulgence and dilusion), I play for fun, I don't really care if I suck or rock, as long as I have fun and while pretty graphics are nice, for Nintendo games the Wii's graphics are sufficient and Nintendo has always made their own systems for their own development first and foremost.
They seem to think the casual market is fickle and just going to up and leave the Wii and DS and without the 'core' it'll be dead. Maybe. Maybe, could happen. Nintendo is well aware of that. Iwata has mentioned it himself. But that same casual market has lifted every major game system from Atari 2600 (another underpowered overachiever) to PS2 (again, the least powerful system last gen) from also-ran to forerunner.
Yes Nintendo has sold systems to people who never bought one before (myself included) and to an extent it's faddish. But it's also saving the industry from itself. Why on Earth would Nintendo want to be like Sony and MS who are both billions in the hole?? Sure 360 is now clearing a profit but will likely never recoop the 5b already lost on 360 alone in the first 2 years and RRoD guarantee. PS3 has wiped out all profit ever made from the Playstation brand and is still losing Sony money to this day. It'll probably take another two successful systems for Sony to even break back even with it's venture into the games industry.
If IGN cannot fathom that Nintendo has saved the games industry from itself by showing how REAL profittability can be obtained then it is they, not the fan-boys who have blinded themselves.
Havn't said that, Nintendo is also blind to social gaming and that desperately needs to be addressed or they will become irrelavent. 360 is leading in that department but all consoles are far, far removed from really reaching that massive market. Look at how many people play that farm game on Facebook. More than any console game, than any console game but a very long shot.
