It's in the eye of the beholder. I can't be a jerk to people I even remotely care about, because I'll feel terrible about it, and if I do by accident, then I'll try to make it up somehow.
That doesn't mean I can't laugh at other people's misfortunes though, and I have no problem joking about rape and murder with my buddies (Yes, the Taylor Swift Torture thread was funny 
)
