Yes they do need difficulty levels. My ex girlfriend and her mom both tried playing TP, and I had to beat certain aspects of the game or they were going to give up on the game entirely.
Also, I agree it has become pretty easy for the most part and I would fully enjoy the added difficulty if given the choice.
