Yes, (gameplay+plot+choosing the right graphics for the game+even more factors) > graphic detail, that's the reason why in single player Duke Nukem 3D was a lot better than Quake and Quake II. Each game has its right graphics, Mario must have cartoon graphics, make him more human and its humour doesn't work anymore, as that darn movie showed (it must also be said that they chose the wrong actor, Ron Jeremy could have been a perfect Mario, not Bob Hoskins
