I have a friend who had a PS2 and Xbox last gen, and had never owned any Nintendo or SEGA consoles previously (he started gaming with a PSX), though he did have GB and a GBA on the handheld side solely for Pokemon which he loves, but was completely ignorant to the other great games on Nintendo's platform and was unwiling to even try most of the first party offerings because of the silly stereotype of Nintendo's games being "babyish".
He's easily impressed by fast paced action games though, so he came round to my house the day i bought Super Smash Bros. Brawl and he tried it out. Loved it immediately, fighters are one of his favorite genre's and this game wasn't like any fighting game he'd ever played before, and he could play as his favorite Pokemon characters as well. As you may have guessed by now, yea Smash Bros. more than convinced him to purchase a Wii and he started saving immediately. Through playing Brawl though, he feels as though he understands a lot more about Nintendo's characters as well as their games and origins, and no longer dismisses Nintendo's consoles as the "kiddiez platform". He got a DSLite for Pokemon as well, but he only has a few games for both consoles, i'm trying to get him to try and play more games. Nowadays he's a little more open-minded to games, but he still relies on me for all the latest news scoops of the gaming world since he doesn't check sites daily/browse forums etc.
I feel good about myself every time i think about it. I like knowing that i've shown someone that there is more to the gaming world than shooters and fighters... and Pokemon, lol.
