I think a red blinking light is overheating issues or if it's a 60GB model then it could be power supply issues, it could mean your PS3 is full of dust and it's having a hard time cooling it down, so either just vacuum it or if you still have a warranty you can get it replaced.
Edit: Another thing the thermal paste might have to be replaced
