A good portion of prototypes for anti-Wii arguments were launched against the DS. "Casual" wasn't yet a popular buzzword in 04 and 05 so the general trolling was that the DS only had "tech demos" compared to the PSP and that they were too shallow. Yoshi's Touch and Go was frequently cited as an offender since its non-complexity ruined many lives on the internet. Of course when the DS trashed the PSP in sales and the PSP's release schedule came to a grinding halt, the arguments went from "PSP has real games and DS has tech demos" to "I don't care about handhelds." |
Funny that it was around that time when I first heard the word springing up, often used as an insult.
I don't know much about the handheld/console front back then, but WoW came out in 2004. For as long as I can remember, this game has had the "hardcore" bitching endlessly about "casuals," and how Blizzard was dumbing the game down by catering to them. It was annoying then, and it's annoying now - I was amazed to hear the same crap when I took more interest into the console end (~2007), it's almost like it followed me here. These "hardcore" really are an intolerable bunch.
