Nintendo uses E3 to talk to the general media -- not the gaming media.
Thus it takes a different approach and does not try to wow the gaming press.
It is probably good since the gaming press does not wow easily where the Wii is concerned.
(These are the same people who thought Nintendo should go "Sega" as far as consoles were concerned and become a third-party software provider before the release of the Wii.)
