It's optional.
Also, people are reading into Square Enix's comments way too much. It's very likely like you'll finish the game in under 40 hours. Every developer gives a BS amount of time to beat the game, but it's usually way overstated. Final Fantasy XII required more time than any previous Final Fantasy for me, but that was only because I had to grind tons at the end.
