Nah, the open world is just a hub. There's no action in it.
They're both action games with dirt-cheap stylized graphics, some decent music and voice work, and a focus on boss fights with a few special challenges thrown in. I'd say the main distinction between the two is that MadWorld offers more interesting fights with goons (thanks to the diverse selection of violence) and more integrated special challenges, while No More Heroes offers more intriguing plot and dialogue.
