The reason for MS releasing project Natal this late in the Gen, this gen or ever is quite simple. Just three letters: Wii.
They're doing it all because of the Wii.
As for it's success, unless it's used primarily as a supplementary input option or Microsoft releases a handheld peripheral to work with it, I don't see it going too far.
