Sony had and overall better year than both MS and Nintendo(compared to 2008)

Sony started out the year with not so good holiday sales, people again bashing it, laughed at the 13 million prediction(which is atleast more possible now)

Killzone 2 didn't meet the super fanboy hype expectation(though it still sold well)
Infamous came out and was recieved well,
E3 came and Sony didn't hit hard but impressed many people with gameplay footage and demos of U2 and GoW III, surprised people with FF XIV(until the *online* title popped up) and the PSPGo($250? really)

Sony suffered from the summer drought, though Batman and Madden 10 managed to sell well on it
Then Sept 1st, probably the saving grace for the PS3 came out with an amazing 1st week and month, Oct rolled in and the PS3 hit hard that month with Uncharted 2, Demon Souls, and Rachet & Clank.

the PS3 managed to outsell the 360(WW sales) all throughout Oct, and surprisingly Nov. which was suppossedly the 360's month(PS3 vs 360) and the PS3 was able to beat it on BF(PS3 sold more in the U.S. then the 360 WW)

I'm very pleased with the PS3's preformance this year, so congrats Sony
