2000-2009 = ten years.

Missed the point. There was no 0000 AD. It started with 0001 AD. This means the current century didn't really start until 2001, which means the current decade doesn't end till 2010.

So why were all those people celebrating the turn of the millenium December 31 1999? I know what you mean, but this is the way it usually works. When talking decades, the 80's is 1980-1989, the 90's is 1990-1999 etc.
