The thing I don't understand is that arcade like gaming has never disappeared. It's always been here and super successful. Whether you want to talk about SHMups, rythm games, NBA Jam or fighters, Blitz, wii sports or puzzle games. If you look at it this way, those arcade games have always been around, and it's the storyline-based games that have been introduced. Again, if you consider story games to be an added game type, industry sales have primarily gone up. This year is close to becoming the first time gaming industry is down YoY in a while, and it's because of less than stellar wii sales. So, in an ironic twist, it is disinterest in arcade-like games that has slowed down industry growth. |
Really? i'd like to see these figures.
The game industry has been shrinking for sometime, it is most notable in Japan, but your starting to see it in U.S. and U.K., its harder to see because there are more consumers.
You say industry sales have gone up, but were these sales, due to story-games? i remember reading an article that cited the Wii to be the prime reason why the industry is doing well.
There has never been disinterest in arcade-like games (wii sports resort, mario kart, NSMBW prove this).
Real industry growth is not due to the same people buying more, but new people buying.
That is, growing the market.
The PS3/Xbox market, is primarily dominated by Ps2/SNES gamers, they have little to no NEW customers, so they are dying.
The Wii is the console that is getting new customers, theirs is the only one that is growing.
No industry can survive with just the same people, because their going to lose interest and die someday.
