I say it's not the serious games, but going towards them, while putting the fun as secondary. Thus we often (not always) get railroad stories, gameplay that is either safe or mediocre, and just more money thrown at it.

As for Mario/Wonderland and Star Fox/StarWars, it's a thematic thing, not something you can see immediately.



A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
