He's not saying they are, he's saying the game has a diverse audience. Kids play it, otaku play it, salarymen play it, housewives play it, seniors play it... Dragon Quest is an "everyone" game, like Super Mario.

I know Final Fantasy doesn't have as wide appeal as Dragon Quest in Japan, but it's still a monumental game.

Final Fantasy is widely popular in Japan, the #2 most popular RPG there. And we're not picking on it. We were just using Dragon Quest as an example to prove someone elses stupid (stereotypical) statement wrong.

It makes very little sense to use past releases of a franchise to judge its current popularity. MH3 is the last main Monster Hunter release, so its current popularity should be judged by it.
But if you want to use past releases:
FFVII, VIII, IX, X > MHP2G

Unlike the "past games" you listed MHP2G is a current gen release. And it's also outsold all those FFs but FFVII/FFVIII, and at the rate it's going it'll likely outsell them too. As will MHP3 whenever it gets released.
Current gen, imo the top 5's looking like it'll be...
