Well, the online aspect of the game is where you will find the most fun, help and animosity at the same time. In this kind of multiplayer, you'll help and get help by giving pre-set messages about dangers, tips and hidden things and leaving them on the ground in each world and you don't interact directly with other characters until you're a bit advanced in the game (after beating 1-1) and you get an item that can allow you to summon help of two other players to help you pass a difficult boss or stage (you can also give your help with the same item while you're in soul form).

Also, the competitive aspect of the game, PvP, happens with another item as well. To be honest, I haven't dwell on the online after I got to New Game +, basically because in order to get some certain events, like Pure White or Pure Black Tendencies to the worlds in the game, it's very difficult to do so online, as all events made by other players affect your own events, thus creating balancing issues in the end.

You can get the same amount of longetivity playing online or offline, but allow me to correct you in one point. I got the game here in Europe, and it's still the NA version, meaning that I play on the NA servers with +5 hours difference. Believe me, there's always people online, some hours more, some hours less, but even by you being in Australia, you'll find people playing DS ;)
