Wow.

So, in theory, Nintendo could actually keep track of their used game sales, too?

That stuff is bananas.

Yep.  SiRAS tracks by serial number for the life of a platform in retail.  They could actually tell you how many times a specific console's been resold even.

Shame NOA doesn't ever release these internal figures (they'd be way more accurate than NPD even) but then there'd probably conflicts of interest raised and they'd probably prefer not to publicly discredit NPD.

I imagine the whole thing is a minefield in terms of legalities and who has rights to which data.

On Sony, I don't believe they have any kind of "internal tracking" as such. As with MS they often claim sales estimates based on "feedback from key retailers" so in a way it's not all that different to what we do on VGC although obviously on a far greater scale - they get feedback from certain retailers and extrapolate to estimate for the whole market.

Yeah, there's no way in hell you'll ever see SCEA allow a Nintendo subsidiary release figures for their stuff.  Even 3rd party Wii/DS games would be tough... Nintendo could probably release their own game/console/accessory figures though, if they wanted.
