I guess is that with each final fantasy released is somewhat up's the bar for overall RPG's. also the Final Fantasy Franchise has been around for about 20 years, so it had much time to accumulate a fanbase
My first final Fantasy game was 10, and it was an absolute masterpiece(IMO) in story and gameplay.....so much so that I went to collect all the major Final Fantasy's titles! now I own 1-12(except for 11)
