First Nintendo masks a relatively underperfoming BF for Wii by "bundling" its sales with DS to give an astounding 1.5 million total (nearly 2/3 of which is DS). Now 360 is celebrating more than 2x previous week's sales and highest week for the year, when in 2008 the week prior to BF was 190K and it did more than 2.5x betterer, and for EVERY console BF week gives highest weekly sales for the year, until pre-Christmas week.
Neither 360 BF achievement (2x previous week, nor biggest week of the year) is particularly note worthy as they are par for the course, to be expected. 2x previous week I would expect to be a minimum target for BF week. Though I'll note that it seems Wii won't get 2x previous week this year, which is partly caused by the NSMB lift the previous week. 360's result will have been dampened by about 50K at least from the Walmart deal.
Nintendo should still be able to claim the win for Wii on BF week vs. PS3 and 360. So that's something at least for Nintendo.
Every company needs to put the best promotional spin on BF sales as possible to build further momentum into December. But those who have access to sales history at their fingertips should not be sucked in to the spin.
The fact is, relative to previous years this BF will be undewhelming for Wii and 360 (only BF week 2006 is looking to be lower for both consoles I think), so 2nd worst BF week of the gen so far is not something to pop the champagne corks on. This time round it's Sony who will have no need to employ the spin doctors for the PS3, but they will need to deploy them for PSP spin, which will be hard.
The best you can say for 360 and Wii is that they can breath a sigh of relief that it wasn't the worst BF week of the generation so far.
