In all honesty, PC gaming is a whole other beast, as different games utilize different specs. And some PC games can come out or run on 'specs' that would be deemed sub par but others have to utilize the most advanced 'specs' to generate interest. Heck, WoW looks pretty bad by todays standards, but people don't play it for its graphical power. They play it because its the most popular and complete MMO out at the moment. But yet some other games coming out are going well beyond the capacity of the avg PC on the market.
Likewise, a large part of the appeal for Final Fantasy has always been because the developers put its graphics at the forefront. And if they had gone with the Wii (or even the DS) for the main games, as say Dragon Quest did, it probably would have been a risky decision. As that's not their market. While Final Fantasy does have many other parts which make up their games such as a large story and changing gameplay, a major selling point of the series has always been its emphasis on being one of the better looking RPGs of its time. Even the FF games which appear on the Wii and DS focus on presentation and graphics, because the developers at SquareEnix know, that's their biggest draw.
Possibly, if they had known 5 years ago that the Wii userbase would be so much higher, they might have chosen to put it on the Wii instead. But I still think they would have put it on the HD systems anyway.
