My first FPS (aside from the building areas in the SNES Jurassic Park) was Doom. It was the SNES port, but it was still simple, didn't need a tutorial, just an area to get used to the buttons, and that was all that was needed. If it had a save feature, I would have loved that game even more.
And FPS to be either blue ocean or disruptive needs just a pick up and have fun quality, as are most of the games that fit those.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
