I think the main problem is that they were playing it in a group. Unless it's multiplayer madness, it's difficult to connect with any game when you have friends/collegues around you cracking jokes.
I see Heavy Rain as being a very single player driven experience, one you would play alone, allowing you to become fully immersed into the game.
I could be wrong, it might be tedious, but I think it was perhaps being judged under the wrong conditions.
