And yeah, I didn't even try to see if they added that ability until the first fight with Bowser Jr. when I was surprised to see it was missing. It would have been a nice nostalgiac kick if they'd kept it, but whachagonnado?

 

Go post on the New Super Mario Bros (DS version thread) that the devs seemed to read word for word, and ask them for it there.

Yep I've been ghosting around here for quite a while, since well before the new site layout. Finally ended up making an account. :D
