WTF? Women have always been the massive untapped market for the games industry*, they've been trying to crack it for years. This is a business conference, pointing out that Nintendo are making progress in that market is anything but pointless! What do you think, he's just looking for bragging rights? Remember that his job largely is to sell his company to investors.
And no, Nintendo haven't always had this. If they did, the Gamecube would not have been a flop. Only the NES was anything close to this. Considering that women make up 52% of Wii players(at least in America: http://www.wiitalk.co.uk/forums/general-wii-discussion/14866-demographics.html), and the Wii has sold 357 million units of software, I think those "female" gamers must have bought some games...
*although 35+ are a larger untapped market which is harder to crack, only the DS is making headway there.
