I've always figured DS was the biggest roadblock to Wii's long term Japanese success.  Is it possible this could kill any hope for a Wii comeback in the future?

I hope not but I guess it´s possible. I think you´re right about the DS being Wii´s biggest competetor because no matter what many others think all systems in Japan compete with eachother. DS definately takes away sales from Wii.
