Anyone who has been burned by the RROD will not appreciate that comment.
They are basically admitting they knew they were putting shoddy hardware on the market and don't see reliability as "vital".

Nintendo have said the same thing actually. So theres no real connection between the two concepts.

Actually they haven't really said that, not decisively. You're confusing hardware with raw power.
Iwata only said power wasn't the only way to advance hardware, but clearly hardware is still important. The Balance Board and WM+ are all hardware, and they needed to be built with a focus on quality.
