The problem isn't that JRPGs are losing momentum in Japan, it's that they are almost non-existent on the ps3 (and that's about to change). All of the ps3's releases in Japan have either been super low budget, ports from the 360, new IP's (Valkyria Chronicles), or SRPGs (other than WKC which did well). That is about to change with the release of FFXIII and RoF. Even Star Ocean 4, a port, should do well.
What Japan needs is a traditional, non SRPG, with a decent budget and cutscenes. And NOT a new IP. Some perfect examples would be Final Fantasy, Dark Cloud 3, KH3, Xenosaga, Dragon Quest, Persona 5, etc. Put one of those out and see if the Japanese JRPG "momentum" is still gone.
