The Lufia II was about how the whole Sinistral mess started. It goes from Maxim being a simple monster hunter to becoming the hero he's known as by the time of the first game. So the timeline goes a little something like:
Lufia II ---> Ruins of Lore (GBA) -----> Lufia ------> The Legend Returns
