Yes, that's exactly why.  If it doesn't come across in the games than it doesn't matter how great the characters are.  That's like if I wrote an epic about Sackboy, sure it might be fun reading material, but in the games he's just a fun little sack of fluff and you can't say "well the books show that he's a great character"
