Short term, it just makes sense. PS3 has the early lead now, and Wii hasn't gained the same sort of momentum as hoped through it's price drop and new software.
Iwata's been pretty upfront about their performance in Japan this year too, even calling it an outright "failure". They better come out guns blazing next year (AAA 1st party games, steady stream of desirable 3rd party games, additional pricedrop, model redesign) or I think Japan's in serious trouble for Wii. They need to line up some DQ remakes/spinoffs, Level-5 games and more Monster Hunter asap.
