Here is a new take on what I'd like to see to refresh a tiring franchise that (IMO) is declining in quality.

1) The stereotypical characters that FF has been throwing out need to become more realistic. No more spiky hairs, no more annnoying little brat that won't shut up but for some reason is an addition to the party, no more teenage heroe full of angst for dumb reasons,etc.

2)The storyline needs to grow up. I'm tired of the typical love story between the main character and some girl that's never resolved for some reason. This has been typical in all FFs since 7. Also the typical we have to save the world deal. I can't recall a Final Fantasy that in the end require you to save the whole world. I haven't played 12 and on so this might've changed but highly doubt it.

3)I absolutely hate the fact that when you get to the very end to fight the main evil character just to end up fighting something else that has no part whatsover in the story or was just a small detail in the story but some reason the cause for another final final evil boss. Talking about the boss, can we make the bosses full of evil like Kefka was? Most bosses in FF have been lame and it started with Sephiroth.

4)I think Japanese humor is weird. I can stand it and sometimes I'll laugh but FF have been adding so much of it lately that it just gets on my nerves. I'd like to see a good balance of oriental and occidental humor since this game is released world wide.

Those are the few that come to mind but I feel are critical to change to create a mature experience.

When you mean not realistic, do you mean in terms of character design or personality?

Personally, I though the love story between Tidus and Yuna was very believeable and among the most realistic of any video game.

When it comes to stories, the way the story is told is more important than the story itself.  I will gladly take a cliched story that is told well over a story that is full of originality but is poorly executed any day.

Japanese humor is weird because the humor was written for the Japanese, not for us.

If that's the case, I have to call out Final Fantasy in both characters and plot.  It is pretty poorly executed in both these fields.  For me, this is not a big problem as plot and 'deep' characters are not the most important thing in an RPG.  Gameplay, exploration and item collection are.  However, along with graphics, plot and character interaction (through long dialogue sequences) does seem to be one of the key components that the Final Fantasy series focuses on.  And frankly, in my view, it just isn't as 'deep' or 'meaningful' as its attempting to be.

I'd be more inclined to compare the plot of the Final Fantasy games next to something like Bleach or Star Wars than any real thought provoking novel with memorable characters and hard hitting banter.  And it has little to do with the cultural differences.  Much of the awkward jokes are due to the dumbed down localizations replacing Japanese jokes and idioms with weak American ones such as 'you'll catch more fish with live bait' and 'Hot Dogs'.

plz tell me ur joking. Let me tell u now an RPG with a weak story is utter shit and not worth playing unless...unless they are either an MMO or have other factors that make it appealing like in demon souls or diablo. But apart from that, a RPG not having a good story is completely unacceptable and worthless (Fable, Fallout 3, oblivion im looking at u guys)

No offense reaver but you show hard fanboyism with your comments. You're obviously biased and close minded if you claim that Fable and Fallout 3 have shitty storylines. Fallout 3 was awesome, Fable was a tad weak. I don't know about oblivion cuz I never played it.
