In fairness, Nintendo milks franchises too. Plus, they make bank off hardware and licensing, two things that are off-limits to third-parties like EA.

The plan to make those two games into multi-media series was hatched long before the first game was launched. For reference's sake, they were expecting Mirror's Edge to sell "at least" 3,000,000 copies (with most of those sales presumably occuring at full price). Dead Space, which got its own animated movie AND spinoff, presumably was supposed to do even better. My guess is that they're releasing the sequels with the hope that they'll catch on the second time around. But I do think it's fair to say that the two titles really did do that badly.
