More specifically, because its the biggest shopping day of the year, as all the best advertisments come out in the Thanksgiving Day newspapers, its been the traditional day all major retailers accounting books first go from red to black, i.e. losing money for the year to making money.
Thus "Black" Friday. Now its turned into a massive sales extravaganza where you generally find the cheapest deals in just about any category as long as your willing to get up really early and wait in long lines in front of a bazillion stores.
