Whether or not you want to admit it, advertising sells games. Especially in the west, it is the primary factor in sales of a game. While we might know of a games existence because we browse forums and look up upcoming games online, the VAST majority of people don't. And the vast majority of people buy games based on advertising and word of mouth (which also comes from advertising).
People can't buy a game if they never hear about it. And games don't sell a million units from their boxart alone.
