You'd think so, but Taiko DS 2 actually increased sales on Taiko DS 1.

Sequels spurring interest in their predecessors is actually pretty common in Japan.  Another example, when DMC4 released, the Best release of DMC3 jumped back into the top 30.  Brain Training 1 also surged when Brain Training 2 released.  I'm sure there's other examples.

Ah, got you. That's pretty interesting actually. Does that same occurence happen in the states as well?

I've no idea, we really don't have enough insight into the US market thanks to NPD's monopoly and NeoGAF's devil's bargain clamping down on leaks.  Chartz is getting better and better, but I think there's always going to be questions of legitimacy here.  

It's really too bad, there's so much data so freely available out of Japan from multiple trackers.
