Well from my perspective, I think its probably a combination of things.

The PS2 had many things going for it at the time, being a dvd player (dvd truly becoming mainstream), software was really starting to come out for it, and the culture of the playstation brand was hip and engaging (marketing).

The Wii had that new cool factor (culture of the Wii?), but the software support unfortunately has been lacking somewhat, and we're in the cusp of new mediums, which the Wii doesn't support, at the moment.

Also we have to look at the culture of the Japanese market. Now, I can only theorize, but maybe this generation of the Japanese people, are more mobile, and maybe spend less time at home. That could be one reason why handhelds are really taking off, and console sales are declining across the board.

Either way, I still believe the Wii will sell tremendously, breaking worldwide sales of the PS2, just not in Japan. There the PS2 is still legend.

I game.  You game.  We game.

I'm a videogamer, not a fanboy, but have a special place for Nintendo.
