It isn't a problem if the consoles have already seen their peak (obviously much more so for the DS). It's all about whether or not they can sustain high sales for the next couple years.

It peaked at it's third year, it may be true that it peaked at it's second "large spike", but if you'll check, that spike is after 140-150 from the PS2's launch.

That's because it launched early in Japan. See: America / Others

The PS2's biggest holiday boost (by far) was 2002, its second year on market.

Now, I don't necessarily think the Wii will overtake the PS2 sales in its current state. However, if Nintendo makes the right moves, it's definitely still possible (will be tough to keep it around as long as the PS2).

Btw, for the week ending 01st Nov, 2003, the PS2 did 363,349. So, the Wii is up for the week (over the PS2) by about 6%.

Even when you take the NA launch it comes out at

Year 1: 11,488,149
Year 2: 19,887,661
Year 3: 21,381,069
Year 4: 19,513,674

So you are still wrong it peaked in it's third year.
