I'm inclined to agree with this post. New IPs are all well and good but they need new ideas and evolutions for people to want to buy them. I think Sony has done this gen with games like LBP, Uncharted (in that it mixes so many game mechanics) and even the weirdo controls in Killzone 2.
I think the people complaining about Nintendo are basically complaining that Nintendo seems to have stopped generating new IPs for core/traditional gamers. In defense of Nintendo though, they have evolved the core franchises and experimented with them a fair bit over the years, otherwise people wouldn't buy them.
