I think the New Play Control series is actually testing grounds to see just how popular franchises are. Nintendo wants to test the market for Donkey Kong and Pikmin ahead of possible entries in both franchises. Then also testing the market for ChibiRobo and Power Tennis seeing if maybe Nintendo should revive those series.
In all I think this was a big experiment. Also note that Nintendo chose titles that under performed on GameCube. Nintendo probubly wanted to make their money back on them. Combined Donkey Kong Jungle Beat has shipped over a million copies and I think that may have been Nintendo's intent.
Are the series successful?
Well I don't know how much money it cost to port those titles but I'm better 300,000 copies sold is more then enough profit. Nintendo had virtually no over head and a chance to sell titles they couldn't sell on GameCube. Nintendo has turned a huge profit by releasing these new play titles!

If they were testing they should of made a new game instead of old games.

Why invest millions of dollars making a new game to test the waters when a couple thousand can see what people are interested in? I think Nintendo is doing alot of testing these days rather then actually producing full blown titles. They are testing the waters to see what will sell and what won't. If for example DK:JB shipped about a million copies you could gaurantee a new Donkey Kong title would be in the works.
