I reckon 81 on Metacritic and 800k LTD. |
Why?
Because it's in a very unlikable genre, and reviewers these days assert what they like into their score.
Psychological Horror is a "very unlikable genre"? Since when?
You see the sales for movies and games in this area? Yeah, it doesn't have mass appeal.
Actual horror games this generation (Silent Hill, Siren, and Fatal Frame 4) have not sold all that well.
None of them received proper marketing either. But I wasn't arguing sales, but reviews. Where did sales come from?
I was answering question as to why it's an unlikable genre. It doesn't have mass appeal and sales support that.
Games that have mass appeal are more likely to be enjoyed (hence the greater review score) by more people.
This is why I've compared it to Ico games. They don't have mass appeal either, but a strong following who's sales never held them back from being hailed as some of the greatest games ever crafted. As I'm sure you know, sales don't reflect quality.

The two aren't comparable as Shadow of the Colossus was quite successful selling over a million.
