That sounds exactly like a PS3 at the moment. Be creative.

You have a perfectly working PS3 right now, so why would the next PS need backwards compatability?

Just a waste of money on Sony's half.

Because the adoption rate is much faster if customers know they can play their current games on next gen than if not. *  As a customer you wouldn't go buy a new console if you know that your current console has a much better set of games, would you?

Also if next gen is an upgraded Cell (which it should be) backwards compatibility should be easy.
