Agreed.
I loved Gears 1, but Gears 2 really didn't do much for me. The Dom/Maria story arc was great and heartbreaking, but because we've never been "trained" to care about any of those characters or their struggle (there's a reason we cared when Aerith died, they spent the whole game establishing the character. Gears as a series spent 1 whole game and 2 hours into the sequel to get the ball rolling before throwing in the emotion 2-3 hours later).
Uncharted was different. I didn't care about Drake, Sully or Elena but at least they were established as characters and you knew what their personalities were. In Uncharted 2, basically from the start you started caring about Drake as a character and the choices he has to make (unlike Uncharted 1 where it was just get the treasure and get out alive and Drake had very few morals).
I do however enjoy Gears gameplay more then uncharted's though. If we're talking about gunplay alone, Uncharted 2 takes several steps in the right direction and is basically on par with the Gears series (minus one awesome chain saw rifle). But unfortunately Uncharted 2 has some fairly clunky platforming controls, which was a massive let down.
Of course Uncharted 2 absolutely dominates in terms of graphics, so on a purely numbers measure, Uncharted wins 2/3 areas. But much more than that, Uncharted 2 is a massive improvement over uncharted 1, Gears of War 2 basically "fixed" the weaknesses in the first game, but doesn't push to do more than that. You have to give the nod for taking a great game in Uncharted 1 and clearly not being satisfied with it at all (which resulted in Uncharted 2 being so great).
