It's just a possibility, but it's your insistance those other possibilities are less likely and important that I am calling you on.

And how would you have backwards compatibility with existing Wii games using a solid state format?

Including a disc drive just for backwards compatibility seems like a waste to me. 

But the Wii does have legacy slots for GC controllers and memory cards, and DVD drives are already inexpensive, so just including another one won't be a problem. And whatever the make, the game cart slot would just be right next to the SD card slot (although likely different to make them harder to pirate).



A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
