Should have guessed. S-E is notorious for cutting features from the initial release of the game and then adding them in a second release so that people pay twice for the finished product, and it's been known for a long time that Lightning had been planned. Others do this too -Kojima most notably, but even Atlus has dabbled in it with P3FES- but Square-Enix is by far the worst offender.

It's getting to the point where I've started to consider just waiting for two years after each S-E game is released before I buy it. I have no intention of, nor should I have to, pay twice for the same game; there should be one finished version released and no more.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.
